A Sage Bonnet Island Wedding | Rachel + Ben
Some couples find Long Beach Island by chance. Rachel and Ben found it every summer of Rachel’s life, long before they imagined getting married there. This sage Bonnet Island wedding was proof that the places we return to hold our biggest moments, even when we didn’t grow up there.
Rachel and Ben met at Penn State. Neither of them is from the Jersey Shore. But Rachel’s family has vacationed on LBI every summer for as long as she can remember, and the island became woven into who she is. When it came time to choose a venue, one of the top waterfront venues on the Jersey Shore was not just beautiful. It was home in every way that mattered.
If you caught their Long Beach Island engagement session, you already know how comfortable these two are in front of the camera. That same ease carried straight through to their wedding day.
The morning started calm and unhurried. Rachel’s bridesmaids moved around her in soft sage robes, coffee in hand, laughter filling the room. Down the hall, Ben and his groomsmen kept things light, trading jokes while they got dressed. There is nothing quite like the quiet buzz of a wedding morning, and I made it my job to stay out of the way and let it unfold.
Rachel and Ben built their day around a palette of sage green and white. It suited Bonnet Island Estate perfectly. Soft sage tones ran through the bridesmaid dresses and the florals, paired with crisp white blooms against the venue’s waterside backdrop. Bonnet Island’s marshy views already lean green and blue, so the palette complemented the setting instead of fighting it, much like another Bonnet Island Estate wedding I photographed with a completely different color story.
The bouquets were lush and slightly wild, full of eucalyptus, ranunculus and garden roses in sage and ivory tones. The reception tables carried the same palette through long, low centerpieces that let guests actually see each other, something I always love.
Bonnet Island’s ceremony space is one of my favorite spots on LBI. The weather gave Rachel and Ben everything they could have asked for. Clear skies, a light breeze off the water, and warm sunshine all afternoon. Rachel walked down the aisle to Ben, who could not stop smiling. This wasn’t just two people getting married. It was a homecoming for Rachel, and a new tradition for Ben.
We spent the afternoon working around Bonnet Island’s docks and waterfront edges, chasing soft light the whole time. Rachel and Ben were easy to photograph because they were so comfortable with each other. No forced poses, no stiff smiles. Just two people who met in college, finally married, cracking jokes between shots.
The sunset is never a guarantee at Bonnet Island Estate. Some nights the clouds roll in. Some nights the light fades fast. Rachel and Ben’s night was the kind every couple hopes for. The sky went gold, then pink, then a deep orange that lit the water behind them. We stepped outside during golden hour and captured some of my favorite frames of the year, Rachel’s sage and white bouquet glowing against that sky.
It is one of those moments where you stop directing and just let two people fall into each other while the island seems to slow down around them.
Once the sun went down, the night turned into a celebration that fit a couple who met making memories in college. Speeches were funny and heartfelt. The dance floor filled up fast, and the sage green details on the tables carried candlelight beautifully as the night went on.
Watching Rachel and Ben’s wedding come together, it was clear this day was never really about the venue itself. It was about a place that already meant something to Rachel, now meaning something to both of them together. Bonnet Island Estate has a way of doing that. It gives couples a backdrop that feels personal, even when their story started somewhere else entirely, like a college campus hours away.
If you are planning a sage Bonnet Island wedding with a green and white color palette and golden hour photos over the water, I would love to hear your story. Every couple brings something different to this island, and I never get tired of capturing it.
